An Advertising Tipping Point

Since so many of the services that libraries depend on (like search engines, magazines, newspapers, etc.), depend upon ads for their primary revenue streams, it’s useful to keep half an eye on the ad industry.

2010 marks a tipping point in the advertising industry, note the following:

“In 2010, for the first time ever, U.S. internet advertising spending surpassed print newspaper advertising spending.”

eMarketer, “which predicts that Web ad dollars will hit $25.8 billion in the U.S. in 2010, while newspaper ad dollars, for both print and online, will get to $25.7 billion.”

“At $28.8 billion, Google’s projected worldwide revenue for 2010 will eclipse the U.S. newspaper business all by itself.”

Any collapse in the ad sector revenues, or any rumble in the industry restructuring, could seriously jeopardize access to information and other content for all, not just libraries.
