Internet petitions, e-mail forwards, and Facebook ‘likes’ have created a bit of an illusion about activism in support of a cause. Libraries enjoy great public support but it can often be ‘soft’ support. Our challenge is in turning the soft supporters into active supporters – voting for budgets and bond issues, talking up libraries with the networks, and more. There are many strategies to do this and it takes great effort – and uses some of the social tools as well. Libbraries must work harder at converting our soft supporters to active, engaged supporter and voters.
