OCLC Canada will hold its annual Symposium on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, from 9h to 13h, during the Canadian Library Association (CLA) Annual Conference and Trade Show, which will take place in Ottawa, Ontario. This pre-conference event is free and open to all, but registration through CLA is required.

Short-term innovations and successes comprise the sum of our big, collaborative odyssey. The Short and Long of Library Collaboration will focus on exciting initiatives happening right now, examine the value of long-term library cooperation and evaluate the roles that libraries, museums and archives play in this epic story.

The future of our world can be viewed as exciting or scary—Frankenlibraries or Librarytopia. We can acknowledge that the future won’t be the same as the past—not by a long shot. But what are the opportunities for communities, cooperation, learning and libraries? Will collaboration in the cloud be what we expect?

The Short:

This portion of the program will feature the following speakers from our membership community, who will share their latest projects and innovative initiatives. These presentations will showcase successful innovation through collaboration, cutting-edge applications that enhance information literacy or the visibility library materials, or that focus on the internationalization of library resources and library collaboration.

Diane Carley, Digital Initiatives Analyst, National Research Council – Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI), will speak about DataCite Canada.

Marc Pillon, Manager Information Technology, Windsor Public Library, will share current initiatives in his presentation, Out With The Desk:  Re-shaping the Service Delivery Model in Libraries.

Peter Webster, Associate University Librarian, Information Technology Services, Patrick Power Library, Saint Mary’s University, will discuss Sharing Discovery: Integrating Academic Library and Open Repository Search with WorldCat Local.

Gwen Bird, Executive Director, Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries, will provide an update on Collection Analysis for COPPUL’s Shared Print Archive Network.

Alan Darnell, Director, Scholars Portal, Ontario Council of University Libraries, will present on The What, When and How of Where:  Building a Consortial Geospatial Portal.

Americas Regional Council Update and Panel Discussion

The Long:

William Maes will provide a brief update on the latest initiatives of the OCLC’s Americas Regional Council (ARC). His presentation will be followed by a lively panel discussion on the long-term impact of local, regional, national and international collaboration among libraries, museums and archives. From reducing the overlap of initiatives, while still working toward achieving the profession’s broader objectives, to identifying potential opportunities to streamline or eliminate some initiatives, this debate will examine many diverse perspectives.

CLA Technology Renewal Fund Cheque Presentation—Daniel Boivin and Stephen Abram will present a cheque to CLA President, Karen Adams (University of Manitoba), for CLA’s new Technology Renewal Fund.

OCLC Update: Celebrating 15 years of OCLC in Canada—Daniel Boivin will provide an update on the last decade and a half of the OCLC cooperative in Canada. We will also wrap up this year’s Symposium by serving cake in celebration of this milestone.
