Interesting graphic. I had no idea that solid state media was so reliable. But that said… this graphic is ridiculously self-serving. Cloud storage may have a theoretical lifetime of more than a hundred years, but that theory hits a cruel reality as soon as the cloud-hosting corporation’s board of directors decides to liquidate those server farms. And why should the company worry about liability or litigation? It can simply declare bankruptcy and reincorporate at a later time.
Yes, there is no perfect format. I agree with the principles of LOCKSS – lots of copies keeps stuff safe.
Even the cloud needs backups – maybe even offline. SLAs –
Service Level Agreements too.
