Murmuration: A model for a Profession

This is my present favourite metaphor for leadership and librarians.

There are leaders in this flock.  Some stand out and provide direction.  Some take on tasks – like fighting hawks.  Some follow well.  The one who don’t participate and stay on the ground may have reasons, but they a bound to miss the action and fun.

This flock behaviour isn’t just for something to do at sunset with your peers.  It’s social, fun, and builds the team.

When our profession has everyone leading (and great followership) we succeed.

Taking down lead birds or followers is dysfunctional.  Constructive criticism and solutions for differences come from roosting together and talking it out.  Dare I say tweeting 😉
