Ask and I shall receive

A friendly reader pointed me towards this 2007 graphic after I asked if one existed.

  1. I don’t see how this graph can have meaning. Pie charts only work when representing distinct parts of a whole, but membership groups of social networking sites are not distinct. Many people are members of more than one group. If I am a member of Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and some (or several) “other” networks, where am I represented here? I wonder how these numbers were calculated.

  2. Great graphic, but the numbers have naturally changed quite a bit since it was generated. Just a few months ago, for instance, FaceBook passed MySpace in terms of unique visitors per month. Not the same stat, I agree, but I think it does illustrate just how much things have changed between 2007 and 2008 when it comes to these two companies.
    See: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/12/facebook-no-longer-the-second-largest-social-network/ for the results.
