You might be a librarian if . . .

Fun article about librarians at http://www.examiner.com/x-1361-Seattle-Books-Examiner~y2008m10d24-You-might-be-a-librarian-if. It opens by providing the following links:
Last year U.S. News and World Report selected librarianship as one of the best careers in 2008 – http://www.usnews.com/articles/business/best-careers/2007/12/19/librarian-executive-summary.html
Shortly after that McSweeney’s posted “Ten Reasons to be a librarian.” – http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/librarian/3prosandcons.html
You might be a librarian if:
You compulsively reshelve items and straighten shelves when browsing at Barnes and Noble
You alphabetize your spice rack (and everything else)
You own more cardigans than shoes
You own cats named “Ernest, “Kerouac,” or “Flannery”
You have a secret desire to be a bookcart drill team
You know the Dewey Decimal System by heart
Nancy Pearl is your idol and you own her action figure
You go on vacation and visit other libraries
You don’t have a Netflix account and borrow all of your music and movies from the library instead
Your home library has just as many books as a small public library
You were totally blogging and social networking before 2003
You read banned books
You can kick everyone’s butt at Scrabble
From Examiner.com, by Danielle Dreger-Babbitt, about whom it says:
Seattle Books Examiner, Danielle Dreger-Babbitt has spent the last 13 years working in bookstores and libraries. She once got grounded for reading in elementary school (it was way past her bedtime). In 2007 she read nearly 200 books, but don’t ask her what her favorite one was. Asking a librarian to pick her favorite book is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. When Danielle isn’t reading, she’s beating her husband at Scrabble.”
Thanks Sam for posting this to the OPLA list. I needed a laugh today!

    Oh dear!
I do alphabetise my spice rack, but at least I don’t own one single cardigan.
As for “cats named “Ernest, “Kerouac,” or “Flannery””, I only have one, with an un-literary name of Scratch, but the other day I ran into a young lady with a white chihuahua (in a bar in SoHo), the dog’s name was Bukowski. I wonder is the chick was a SoHo librarian.
