Losing Libraries

Two links of note. I know it’s somewhat depressing but it is important that we track this and note the closing of minds everywhere:

LosingLibraries.org is Launched by Librarians and Library Journal

“In an effort to map and chronicle the full range of cuts, closings, and diminished library services nationally, Library Journal, in partnership with Mandy Knapp and Laura Solomon (responsible for SaveOhioLibraries.com), has launched LosingLibraries.org. The dynamic website, which relies on reader contributions, has begun to track – via links to articles, announcements, and press releases – the myriad cuts
and changes affecting public libraries around the country. Color-coded tags indicate which kind of cuts have been implemented, including branch closures, staff layoffs, and reduced hours. The map also overlays the
changing annual picture since the recession began in 2008.”

On a similar vein, you can look at what’s happening in school libraries here:

A Nation without School Librarians

“This map marks the cities, towns, communities, and states that have made the decision to either eliminate certified school library positions (indicated in blue) or require one school librarian to work with two (2) or more school library programs throughout the week (indicated in red).

Although hundreds of studies show the impact that School Librarians have on student achievement, these school districts believe otherwise.

Let’s compare the student achievement scores without a school librarian in a year or so to discover what thousands of library supporters already knew.

School Librarians DO make a difference!”

Librarians and library supporters across the country are adding to this online map.

Know of any libraries that should be added? You can add them.

I quote James Carville from SLA in New Orleans this year where he said:

“Each time a library closes, we blow out a candle.”

Carville encouraged us to make a list of all the libraries that close each year to illustrate how bad the darkness is.

Amen.
