My Lighthouse Blogiversary

OK, today is July 8, 2010 and that’s the blogiversary of this blog, Stephen’s Lighthouse. If someone had told me 5 years ago that I’d make it this long with the blog I’d have been suspicious but I continue to enjoy this experiment – a lot.

Five years ago today I posted this:

“Well here’s my first formal blog posting. Welcome to Stephen’s Lighthouse where I’ll muse about things library and librarianesque.
The lighthouse theme is based on what lighthouses do – shine a light on the waters and/or sound a horn to help ships navigate the course. They don’t always stop the ships from crashing onto the rocks but they help most of the time.
So, arrogant or not, I hope that this blog contributes in some small way to helping the good ship Library World navigate to their vision of the future,
Cheers,
Stephen”

So, over the course of two employers this blog has persisted for five years. That’s not as long as some other blogs but it’s still pretty good for me as a consistent effort. Lord know I change things up a lot just to keep interested and learning! I’ve posted something like 3,378 postings and received 2,345 comments (actually quite a bit more but I spare you the 10’s of thousands of bad ones by filtering). I’ve gotten some nice kudos and also ignited debates and criticism. I’ve learned and found some of the edges of my own thinking. I’ve learned that there are multiple philosophies in in library land and that’s good and healthy. For the most part it has been a fun and positive experience. If that ever stopped I’d stop.

I moved to my own domain a few months ago – stephenslighthouse.com. I hope you moved along with me but if it’s not showing up in your usual feeds please re-add me to your RSS alerts in Google Reader, Bloglines, or whatever you use.

Thank you for reading. I’ll keep posting stuff that interests me, and I hope you find it interesting too.

Stephen

    Stephen,

I recently subscribed to your blog via RSS as a new grad MLIS. I wish I had been reading this along my educational journey because you often reference (and lead me to explore) other influential thinkers in the field.
