The Class of 2014

OK, this is about college students but my wife’s grade 4 class this year was mostly born in 2001. Yep 2001! I am floored at the inexorable progress of time.

However, the new 2010 annual Beloit College list is out and it’s good as usual. People will pick at nits but overall it makes its point every year that we have a fresh class coming in from different experience than us and even their classmates. It’s as important to recognize and respect that as well as to prepare them for their future not our’s.

The Beloit College Mindset List for the Class of 2014

“Each August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List. It provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. The creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it was originally created as a reminder to faculty to be aware of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation. The Mindset List website at www.beloit.edu/mindset, the Mediasite webcast and its Facebook page receive more than 400,000 hits annually.”

The 75 items this year will encourage debate and discussion and that’s good.

  1. This list blows me away every year. This time I especially like #28: “They’ve never recognized that pointing to their wrists was a request for the time of day.” OMG!!

Now that recall, it takes me 11 months to get over how old this list makes me feel every year. ;-<
