Where does sharing on the web come from?

One of the great benefits of social media and the web in general is the abilty to share – all those button and features that let you recommend, share, borrow, post, etc. with your friends and contacts. Hsarsing is certainly one of the core values of most libraries and these social media features could enhance our websites and mission.

This chart just shows the referral pattern for one big top 10 website (Gossip site Gawker). It does show some potential trends in the overal consumer market but it made me think of the information you can get from our Google Analytics data about what people are doing with your pages and data. For your site, is Facebook way up, Digg down and StumbleUpon growing? Is Twitter flat? Do library cardholders behave differently than the general public consumer? I know they have different reading patterns than retail users, so we might have different social media behaviours too. It’s an interesting question, I think.
