The Eight Dimensions of Wellness
Wellness Round Up January 12, 2024 – The Eight Dimensions of Wellness
“Check out this episode of the Library Leadership Podcast – The 8 Dimensions of Wellness for Librarians for an exploration of them in libraries.
One of the things I like about them is that there are so many places to succeed. If you are struggling, pick one and focus on that.
The eight dimensions are:
- Emotional – coping with life’s challenges and having meaningful relationships
- Physical – nutritious food, good sleep habits, preventing injury, managing chronic illness
- Financial – feeling in control and satisfied with current and future finances
- Social - a sense of connection and belonging
- Occupational/vocational – purpose, satisfaction, growth, and work/life balance
- Environmental – care and design for your personal environment for stimulation and well-being support
- Intellectual – continuous learning, creative expression, new skills and knowledge
- Spiritual – sense of purpose and meaning, beliefs, morals, and ethics.
If you want to explore the eight dimensions further, here are a few resources.
- Eight Dimensions of Health at Northwestern – I like this one because the physical aspects have nothing to do with weight and weight loss and instead deal with awareness and agency.
- Creating A Healthier Life: A Step-By-Step Guide To Wellness from SAMHSA (pdf) This is a workbook.”
