“AI Fact Checkers |
In this politically charged season where our social media feeds are full of viral misinformation, fact-checking is more essential than ever. Snopes, the go-to site for debunking internet myths since 1994, has launched FactBot, its first AI-powered tool for fact-checking. |
Developed in collaboration with the Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub and Amazon Web Services, FactBot uses generative AI to provide accurate answers across a wide range of topics—from politics and news stories to viral social media posts and misinformation. The tool also aims to minimize the risk of AI “hallucinations”—the misleading errors that can occur when AI models stray from the facts. |
Still in its beta phase, FactBot is now open to anyone eager to test it. We did just that, comparing it to Perplexity AI, another fact-checking bot. Our test case? Checking a long-standing conspiracy theory about military jets spraying chemicals over civilian areas. |
FactBot delivered a concise summary and linked to five archived articles that debunked the claim. However, Perplexity AI’s response was more comprehensive, detailing the rumor’s origins, military responses, scientific explanations, and various debunking efforts, all backed by credible and diverse sources. For now, Perplexity seems to have the upper hand. |
In an age saturated with information, the need for reliable sources has never been greater. Fact-checking tools like these are the latest defense against misinformation.” |
