| For more than a decade, Elon University’s studies of the future of digital life have paid particular attention to the rise of artificial intelligence and its social and political impacts. Dating back to 2014, we’ve looked at expert views on:
A capstone effort to bring all this work together will occur on September 17, when we join with RTI International to host a conference in Durham, N.C., and on a webcast: The Human Edge: Our Future with Artificial Intelligence.
WE HOPE YOU’LL JOIN US FOR THE WEBCAST. You can register on this webpage: www.rti.org/event/human-edge-our-future-artificial-intelligences.
The day’s proceedings will begin at 8:30 a.m. (EDT).
The conference will feature these keynotes and presentations:
- James Boyle, professor of law and founder of the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke University, author of the book “The Line: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Personhood.” He will offer insight on the legal and philosophical issues raised by intelligent agents.
- Erich S. Huang, MD, PhD, head of clinical informatics at Verily (Google’s life sciences subsidiary) and chief science and innovation officer for Unduo/Verily. He will discuss the latest trends in AI and healthcare innovations and how they will affect human well-being.
- Beth Simone Noveck, chief AI strategist for the State of New Jersey and director of the Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University and its partner project, The Governance Lab. She will discuss the impact of AI on democracy and collective problem-solving.
- I will represent Imagining the Digital Future Center and report on a new survey covering public views about the impact of AI on key human capacities and attributes. This material will complement the extensive report from the Center on expert views about being human in the AI Age.
The gathering will also feature an exciting session on the AI capabilities and initiatives at seven regional universities and the National Humanities Center.
One of the main goals for the day is to start the process of creating a long-term research agenda about the evolution of humans and AI systems at the intersection of:
- AI’s potential impact on education, workforce, and labor
- Human agency and creativity
- People’s mental and physical health and well-being
- AI governance and democracy
Please join us if you can.” |
