Norm Oder at Library Journal dug into the story about whether libraries can loan Kindles with books on them. Here’s what Amazon said:
“Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener told LJ that a loan of a Kindle without content is OK but sharing a device loaded with content “with a wide group of people would not be in line with the terms of use.”
Huh? Read more here.
An empty Kindle? What a fun thing! What’s next – blank paperbacks with free delivery?

I think that you could argue that a PL is not loaning to a wide group of people. While there is a *potential* to loan to a wide group of people, the PL only loans to one patron at a time. I think that there could be some ADA argument in there as well – that using Kindles to loan books helps the library serve a wider variety of patrons. I can’t believe Amazon would go after a PL. Can you imagine the bad press? Still, stupider things have happened. Very interesting; thanks for pointing us to the story
