Ch Ch Changes at the top of search land

What is America’s most popular website?

It can be a little hard to add it up but here’s one answer of the top 100.

Facebook Defeats Yahoo to Become America’s Second Most Popular Website

Note that Yahoo didn’t decline as much as you or I might expect and that the period of decline was the one in which we saw all the ongoing decisions about mergers and acquisitions. That all ended today when the US DOJ and the EU approved the alliance between Microsoft and Yahoo.

Other stats reporters have a different but similar picture:

Expect some changes over the coming months. They’ve had time to prepare. This isn’t two also rans in the search and portal space challenging the Goog. These are two big guys. Watch Bing and watch Yahoo and how this all plays out.

Either way, it is suicide for any institutional strategy to underrate the importance of Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, Encyclopedia.com and Yahoo!/Bing and other top 10 sites.

As an aside it was interesting to see the Goog donate $2 million US to Jimmy Wales’ Wikipedia Foundation. It must be very important to their search algorithms, eh?
