Not really knew–education theorists (e.g., Lev Vygotsky) have been talking about this kind of learning for many years (zone of proximal dvelopment. Nice explanation, though.

I believe Dr. Brenda Dervin (sense-making theory) and Carol Kuhlthau also promote variations on the gap theory.
