As the classic HBR article noted,
Once more with feeling, how do you motivate employees?
Really, just know that you can’t directly motivate people.
All you can really do is create an environment where people can motivate themselves.
Get out of the way, remove the barriers . . .
And drop the carrot. It’s hard to applaud when you’re holding a big carrot.
