The Current State of Social Media

Sometimes we worry that social media is more deeply penetrated than it really is. It is still a young technological intervention. Most studies talk about the usage in Internet users, not the general population. Many are about certain demographics like urbanites or Millennials. Some data is household data which overstates the market penetration. Some growth numbers are the function of small numbers.

Then again, if you’d counted television penetration in the early Fifties you’d have seen less adaoption that was going to happen. That’s why the batle is still interesting and who watching the developments in MySpace, Google+, Baidu, and Facebook, et al are worth paying attention to. It’s still anyone’s game, the the stakes are high.
