There is economic value in library cardholders. Mostly we really know who they are. That’s why libraries protect patron privacy so zealously. Anyway, apparently others aren’t so scrupulous:

Some estimates are that we have between 55-75% of the population as cardholders (of any age from 15-99+). That’s better than other things like driver’s licenses, any credit card, Amazon customers, Kindle owners, etc.
Think about it and why so many non-traditional enterprises are offering services about e-books, textbooks, e-readers, etc. Are they seeking access to a wider market on the backs of libraries’ indisputable trust ranking?
