Stephen, you ask “Why do I constantly need to re-learn this?” I think it applies to all humans. Each criticism is different – focused on a different action or trait, or delivered by a different person. Consequently I react to today’s criticism as though it is a new thing that needs to be handled differently to yesterday’s. It may be a new topic from a different person but that doesn’t make it NEW. And how I react does depend very largely on whether I’m in a “down” state of assuming everything is my fault anyway!
