Espresso Book Machine Video

I’ve said this before and a few academic and public libraries now have Espresso Book Machines, but this video shows the disruptive power of machines to still cause change as well as the library opportunity with respect to on-demand books.  Is the the future of ILL and patron-driven acquisitions?

I assume smart people would put it into a room or basement that reduced the noise.
I heard the same criticism of photocopiers back in the day and now patrons would be angry if they aren’t there and mad when they’re broken.
I’d bet that patrons would be angry if they didn’t have instant access to a print copy of most books in 5 minutes because some staff or community member hated a few minutes of noise. And copiers are much quieter nowadays.
As for food courts, they look pretty busy, public and affordable. We all can’t dine in fine and quiet restaurants.

  3. Hi,

Sacramento Public Library has an Espresso Book Machine and it isn’t loud at all. And we’re busy creating a community based publishing center that is extremely popular. In fact, we had an event last night with 125 people!

Huh. I thought the noisiest part of the video was the kids trying to climb all over the machine and loudly voicing every maneuver it made. Otherwise it was totally cool. We have one where I work and I can’t wait to try it out on something.
