Chairing Committees, Or, Why Herd Cats When You Can Just Dangle String?

A very wise post by Jessica Olin about leading committees:

Chairing Committees, Or, Why Herd Cats When You Can Just Dangle String?

  • “Always express your gratitude.
  • Follow up.
  • Be ready to pinch hit.
  • Don’t just talk; remember to listen.”

I’ve helped lead a number of associations and committees – both volunteer anbd paid.  I heartily agree that vision and intangible rewards trump micro-management most of the time.

The above post reminded of ths:

Reminiscent of a verse from the Tao Te Ching:

When the Master governs, the people
are hardly aware that he exists.
Next best is a leader who is loved.
    Next, one who is feared.
The worst is one who is despised.

If you don’t trust the people,
    you make them untrustworthy.

The Master doesn’t talk, he acts.
    When his work is done,
    the people say, “Amazing:
we did it, all by ourselves!”
