8% of Online Adults Use Twitter Every Day

Pew released their latest in a series of reports on Twitter adoption based on recently-collected data. The report is available for immediate publication at   http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2012/Twitter-Use-2012.aspx  (see also our previous reports on the topic from 2010 and2011).

Among the key highlights:

·        Overall adoption was stable over the last year (15% of online adults now use Twitter, similar to the 13% who did so last May).

·        At the same time, intensity of usage has increased—8% of internet users now use Twitter on a typical day.

·        African-Americans continue to use Twitter at very high rates—28% of online African-Americans are Twitter adopters, and 13% use the service on a typical day.

·        Usage by young internet users (those 18-24 years old) increased dramatically over the last year, with nearly one in three now using Twitter.

Our data also suggests that these trends are deeply intertwined with mobile Twitter usage on smartphones. Fully 20% of smartphone owners use Twitter overall, and 16% use the service specifically on their cell phones.

Most Americans don’t use Twitter. But about half who do use it every day.

Of 2,253 U.S. online adults surveyed in a recent Pew study, 15% said they use Twitter. Among the same population, 8% said they use the service on a typical day day.

Growth in daily Twitter usage, by Pew’s measure, has grown 300% since November 2010 — outpacing growth in general Twitter usage, which increased 87.5% during the same time period.

Men and women are almost equally likely to say they used the service, but young adults, African Americans, and urban residents have high rates of Twitter usage relative to their peers.

Twitter says that it has 140 million users, making its community about 45% the size of the U.S. population. Usage of the network still doesn’t come close to Facebook, however, which claims 901 million active.”
