Libraries and Community Employment

Here’s another reason why librarie are so important.

I am willing to bet that career questions are in the top 5 reference queries at many libraries. I heard recently that a properly done reference interview on this question alone can take up 45 minutes.

A Decade of Unemployment

A look at American unemployment rates by state, 2000-2009

It is time for libraries to invest in resources and collaboration in career tools and job finding resources.

The primary cause of unemployment is the elimination of jobs. You cannot find jobs that do not exist.

I would rather see public libraries focused more on fostering independence, creativity, and entrepreneurism among the working classes, to help free themselves from dependence on corporate wages.

Imagine the incredible (positive) social change we’d see if the working class rejected the good worker/good consumer role they’ve been condition for since their first days in primary school, and became independent influencers of the economy.

I agree and I think you’ll find huge collections in most libraries on this topic as well as online resources. I’ve seen dozens of programs encouraging entrepreneurs. I don’t believe library career strategies a limited to traditional jobs at all. Indeed, the public library is often the entrepreneur’s only library. I’ve read some research that shows that entrepreneurs and self-employed people and consultants are more successful when they do library research.

  2. Wow, that is incredible. Career help (and the associated technology needed to draft resumes and submit online applications) is quickly becoming a prime mission of libraries.
