Canaries in the mine

Coming soon in March, Denver Public Library plans to be the first U.S. public library to offer downloadable movies They will be offered from the same site where downloadable eBooks and audio eBooks are offered, and will use a newer version of the Overdrive Media Console and Windows Media Player, Find out more here.
Another nail in the coffin for VHS and DVD.
SirsiDynix Normative Data Project data is showing that DVD passed VHS as the movie format of choice in November/December 2005. I suspect that this next period won’t last too long.
The first streaming movies at Denver PL will be documentaries, self-help and travelogues.
DPL is already getting press in the Denver Post and Rock Mountain News.

    Stephen,
When you’re talking about another nail in the coffin are you referring just to library circulation?
Even if that’s the case I’m not sure I’m willing to accept your premise. Except probably in rare cases, downloaded movies would be viewed on a much smaller screen and potentially in a less comfortable setting than a DVD or VCR. I think patrons are more likely to have a VCR or DVD player than a computer with an acceptable screen-size for viewing.
Also I expect there may be a demographic divide with younger patrons being more willing to watch movies on a computer than older patrons.
The new offering will likely increase circulation of the materials. It may even extend the reach of the library depending on the criteria DPL uses for permitting access. A good new offering, but I don’t think a replacement.
With a sweep of his hat,
    Paul
