From Search Engine Watch:
46% of Searchers Now Use Mobile Exclusively to Research [Study]
“Mobile is movin’ on up as a preferred device for consumers to perform research on and purchase with in the U.S. This, according to findings in the 2013 Mobile Path-to-Purchase study by Telmetrics and xAd.
Research from the study suggests more and more, consumers are using mobile devices to complete tasks from start to finish. Fifty percent of respondents said they use their mobile devices to start the search process; 46 percent use mobile exclusively when performing research online.
Bill Dinan, president of Telmetrics, says mobile devices are often a staple in any online search.
“For most consumers, even if they are searching on their PC, they still have their smartphone in the other hand to call a business or conduct parallel research,” he said.”

Does mobile include tablets? If so, I am not surprised. If not, I question if they are actually “studying”. Then again their eyes would be better than mine 😉

This begs the question, how do users differentiate between “research” and “search?”

I basically see little difference between shopping behaviours and research behaviours.Just because we don’t pay in hard currency for identifying a book or an article (other than laterally through taxes or tuition) we still pay in valuable stuff like time, reputation or long term success like passing or getting that degree. Looking at value, time, satisfaction, and price/cost together is a challenge for libraries to understand researchers better as they transfer skills and/or behaviours from the consumer space to library offerings.
Young people’s eyes are definitely better than mine but the research does include mobile of all types including tablets. Tablets do delight older user cohorts though.
