LexisNexis Technology Gap Survey

A Study Examines Technology Gap in Use of Technology Among Different Generations
Friday, 1. May 2009, 19:48:49
LexisNexis has released a report on how Boomers (44-60), Generation X (29-43) and Generation Y (28 and younger) use technology in the work space. It is called “Technology Gap Survey” and is available here for free. (47 page PDF)
Some teasers:
* Only seventeen percent of Boomers believe using laptops or PDAs during in-person meetings is “efficient,” while more than one third of Gen Y do.
* Only twenty-eight percent of Boomers think blogging about work-related issues is acceptable, while forty percent of Gen Y workers do.
* Sixty-two percent of Gen Y professionals report accessing a social networking site from work, versus only fourteen percent of Boomers.

  1. Just saw this survey and found some of the findings very confusing. From their survey:
•Gen Y workers report spending an average of 17.4 hours in a workday using a PC, a PDA and a mobile phone, whereas, Boomers report spending just 9.7 hours a work day using the same devices.•Gen Y workers report spending an average of 20.5 hours a work day using e-mail programs, Internet browsers, instant messaging programs and Microsoft Office programs, while Boomers only report spending 11.9 work hours using the same programs.•Gen Y workers report spending an average of 10.6 hours of every work day accessing social networking web sites, news web sites, blogs, Internet forums andmultimedia sharing web sites, versus 5.6 hours reported by Boomers.
I don’t know how to calculate 20.5 hours a workday- thoughts. Also I was disappointed that they didn’t offer any recommendations on how companies can begin bridging this gap.

  2. Just saw this survey and am a bit confused about some of the findings. ..particularly this:
Not sure how they can up with these statistics..but seems that spending 10.6 hours of every work day accessing social networking web sites can’t possibly be accurate
