Library borrowing soars as Aussies look up free resources

Australians are returning to libraries in record numbers as living costs rise, according to the Australian Public Libraries Statistical Report 2023-2024. The report shows a nearly 10% increase in physical visits, and a total of 174 million items borrowed or accessed. Digital engagement is also rising, with electronic materials comprising 28% of collections. However, libraries face financial challenges, with per-capita funding dropping 12% in five years.
