Library workers–IMLS grants are open again, but you really need to read the outline for what the agency, still being directed by the current administration, wants from applicants per their Notice of Funding Opportunity (https://lnkd.in/gZvWUPk6). They aren’t interested in projects that prioritize libraries nor truth. They want projects which prioritize whitewashed history and they want opportunities to develop and push propaganda in support of America 250.

Here’s a deeply concerning passage in the document: ” Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program: IMLS has particular interest in exploring alternative pathways into the library services field. We are particularly excited about projects that explore innovative alternatives to traditional credentialing and librarian education. We are also interested in projects which explore cutting edge tools and fresh topics in the content and provision of continuing education.”

A couple additional concerning passages: “In his inaugural address, President Trump said “We will stand bravely, we will live proudly, we will dream boldly, and nothing will stand in our way because we are Americans.” We welcome projects that refocus cultural institutions on what unites us by fostering respectful civil dialogue. In doing so, we acknowledge our core Constitutional Rights, including Free Exercise of Religion. Applicants may find it helpful to review and consider EO 14188, “Additional Measures to Combat AntiSemitism,” and EO 14202, “Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias,” as they work on projects to strengthen American civil society.”

And “We also encourage institutions that promote a positive and uplifting vision of American history and our shared national achievements to consider applying to IMLS.”

They want to find projects that dismantle the credentialing and professionalization of the field. They want “cutting edge tools” like AI that can undermine professionalization of the field.

The administration has already stolen millions of your tax dollars and funneled them out of the IMLS and directly into the America 250 projects. IMLS funds travel downward, from the federal government to the states, agencies, and libraries; what the new administration has done is taken millions and funneled them upward to their own projects. That became apparent in their “Freedom Trucks” project, announced last fall (see here: https://lnkd.in/guMtGBB5).

None of this is the fault of the staff of IMLS, which is still half the size it was before the agency’s gutting in March. It’s the result of Trump’s hostile takeover and Sonderling’s continued installation as administration of IMLS.

Apply for those grants. They’re YOURS for the application. But the fact is, if your project doesn’t fall in lockstep with the priorities, your chances may be bad. The language and goals outlined here for what IMLS will fund are concerning and a reminder that this agency continues to be viewed as the propaganda arm of our authoritarian regime.”
