NOTATION: AI use makes scientists more productive – and noticeable!
In the past week, some major news stories have highlighted AI’s impact on science productivity. One widely discussed study, first published in Nature in January and reported by Science.org, analyzed over 41 million papers. It found that scientists who use AI publish three times more papers and get nearly five times more citations, but collectively, science narrows its scope by about 4.6% (a measurement worth a little sceptical examination!), with researchers clustering around popular topics and reducing overall interconnectedness. Another story from Science News describes how researchers are using AI agents to discover new medicines and materials, and even write research proposals, sparking debate about whether AI is becoming more like a collaborator in the lab. This is a trend that we have mapped already.
