Microhoo

An interesting weekend on the Microhoo front. I don’t think it’s over yet. Jerry Yang called MS’s offer a distraction. I wonder what he’ll call the lawsuits and class actions when Yahoo’s stock falls next week. It could take years to finish writing this story.
Either way, for libraries, there aren’t many free search engine web harvests left and all suffer the influence of SEO.

    What do you mean by “free search engine web harvests” and how does the Yahoo/Microsoft deal affect them?
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    The search engines work by harvesting data and content from the web. The big harvest are the ones you use on the free search engines. If AOL, MS, Yahoo and Google combine in some fashion we have reduced choice. If Google underpins Yahoo through ad support, If MS and Yahoo merge evewntually, if AOL uses another harvest, it ends up being very similar with less innovation in search and less real choice. Sort of like when Starbucks bought Seattle’s Best Coffee….
