Any Jerks in your life?

Jerks at Work: How to Cope
We’ve all worked with them at one time or another: people who are disruptive,
abusive or otherwise demeaning or mean-spirited. The question is: How should you
deal with them?

It seems after the last few conferences I’ve attended that this is a deep topic to get our colleagues going over coffee or in a session. I’ll look forward to the book but I won’t share some of the stories here. There are some horrors out there though! I wonder how these folks get so empowered?

  1. Thanks for the post. I am fairly jerk free currently, but the damage has been done. Coping isn’t a cure for jerks because they ruin your work life to the point where your income as well as trust in an employer are too damaged to ever be right. Usually, you have to leave when it has been really bad. I think the costs of allowing jerks to run rough shod over people are far higher than the savings extracted through their high handed behavior.

  2. How did they so empowered? By getting away with it. Every time they act like a jerk and nobody steps up, they learn it pays to be a jerk. It’s hard confronting a jerk, but usually you will not stand alone in your actions once you start acting on it.
