Scary Times for Newspapers

Here’s a scary chart from the National Newspaper Association:

How can libraries address the issue of the decline of the print newsmedia – fewer ads will mean fewer stories, fewer columns, fewer reporting scoops and possibly an increase in the share of sports, entertainment and weather news? Can we help ensure an informed public?
What will our e-collections looks like for our communities locally? What’s the best plan? With most US cities being one newspaper towns along with USA Today, what diversity of voice and opinion do we support? Can we offer better collections now? Will we get more national and international? How about Kindle subscriptions for borrowing in the library reading area?
It’s a bigger issue that is often thought about. Democracy depends on on an active fourth estate. We play a role.

  1. Are the sales of online ads on the digital versions of these newspapers also suffering?
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Online ads are down 3% which is far less but they’re not material to the overall revenue picture – not growing fast enough to replace the cost structure.
