Best Careers for 2009: Librarian

From US News & World Report
Best Careers 2009: Librarianby Marty Nemko on December 11, 2008
“Overview: Forget about that image of librarians as a mousy bookworms. More and more of today’s librarians must be clever interrogators, helping the patron to reframe their question more usefully. Librarians then become high-tech information sleuths, helping patrons plumb the oceans of information available in books and digital records, often starting with a clever Google search but frequently going well beyond.”

Every time I post one of these positive stories (and there have been many of them in the past few years) I get a few comments from people saying it’s not true and their lives are awful and the world is ending. Many of these comments are unpostable due to the nasty language and grammar. I do recognize that there are personal and local conditions and economic changes afoot that have little to do with the value of an individual librarian and that sometimes this causes angst. All I can say is that I find attitude trumps aptitude almost every time.
So consider this a test. If you read the top of this post and thought “b.s.” or something like that, think about your attitude. Is it working for you? I heard from an acquaintence that their sad sack attitude worked for them because they were never disappointed. Too bad. It’s a sad way to live and their world will just get smaller as folks decide to associate with more positive people and employers often hire (and fire) for attitude.
Stay positive. It’s rocky when we’re giving birth to the information and knowledge-based economy and positive, clear-eyed folks will see and be more open to the emerging opportunities.
