Nice Cincinnati Enquirer Article

This article in the Cincinnati Enquirer is a great motivational read:
What libraries are worth to us by Kara Swisher
My favourite quotes:
“It is needlessly provocative and shamelessly antagonistic behavior to pit books against technology. No one should ever do this. They are both sources of information. They are entirely different species, never meant to compete with each other.”
“In lean times and fat times alike, the public library is the one place where it’s always OK to overindulge.”
“This atmosphere is in no way accidental. Librarians are almost eerily aware of what goes on inside your head. They know your tastes better than you do, being trained to cut through your vague references to plot or author and put their hands on what you need.”
Cool. And a great way for Cincinnati PL to promote their high growth in usage.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Stephen!
Who knew, “The Main Library downtown [in Cincinnati] is the single busiest library in the nation despite serving the 34th largest market.”
The New York Times yesterday posted a profile of the director of the Queen Library at Broadway (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/09/nyregion/09experience.html). The Times calls it “a busy place in the busiest public library system in the nation,” which isn’t quite the same as Cincy’s claim. Maybe there’ll be a friendly rivalry between Cincinnati and Queens.
Also, I think you might be mistaking Krista Ramsey of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Editorial Board, with The Wall Street Journal’s technology writer Kara Swisher (http://kara.allthingsd.com).
