Public Library Career Centers

One of my favourite libraries for being innovative is the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenberg County (Imaginon, Second Life, the first 23 Things, and much more). Charles Brown, the director there has provided great leadership and his team truly steps up to the plte in making a BIG difference in their community AND telling folks about it.

Watch this video about their opening for their new career center.

Full disclosure: Yes one of the products discussed is the Gale Careers Transitions product that is a centerpiece in the newly renovated space.

When Charlotte Mecklenburg Library launched their Job Help Center – January 21, 2010 – many State, City and County officials were on hand to tour the new facility and get acquainted with the resources it will offer to job seekers in the community.

Among those resources is Gale’s Career Transitions – a new online tool designed to provide immediate help for people navigating the new economy. Career Transitions provides a practical and personalized experience for users of all backgrounds and technology comfort levels.

What I want you to see is how well they planned the opening and the key people they invited. They got on local TV and in the local press. It’s also an awesome space that helps to make the library’s contribution to the career success of their citizens very clear.

Awesome.

  1. All hail Charlotte Mecklenburg Library! Congrats to all of the great libraries out there who are not only doing this kind of work, but getting it the kind of publicity and public support it so richly deserves. The library isn’t the “third place” it’s the “one place” where the community can go to engage with consuming, to share ideas, to support one another, to self-actualize! The library is the ONLY place I can think of that does that for all of the members of its community without any kind of angle. And what do we need more than that in these tough times?
