Change: The Jobs of Yesteryear

Cindy Romaine points to an interesting post:

These Jobs are Definitiely not Future Ready

The Jobs of Yesteryear

Lector
Elevator Operator
Copyboy
Riverdriver
Iceman
Lamplighter
Pinsetter
Milkman
Switchboard Operator
Typist in a Typing Pool
Typesetter
Telegraph Operator

I was interested that, except for Lector, I have known and worked with people who have held all of these jobs so this isn’t ancient history.

Choosing a career is quite the difficult and interesting task these days. It appears to be true that we will have have multiple careers.

    Hi Stephen,
This is a fun list, thanks!
I don’t know whether it’s an age thing or a NA / UK thing but I have never even heard of some of these job titles. (It’s taken me a fair bit of searching to find out what a ‘riverdriver’ is, but then we don’t have a lot of timber over here!)
    All the best,
    Charlie.

You can still get a job as an elevator operator in Japan:

“Why does Japan, the world’s most efficient economy, have so many elevator operators and gas station attendants?” – By Daniel Gross – Slate Magazine http://goo.gl/dsUN

  3. My Grandmother was an elevator operator.

  4. Somewhat relieved that librarian is not among this list.
