What is innovation?

What is innovation? How would you define it?

Here are a few I found:

“The ability to deliver new value to a customer.” – Jose Campos

“All innovation begins with creative ideas . . . We define innovation as the successful implementation of creative ideas within an organization.” – Wikipedia

“something new or different introduced: . . . 2. the act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods.”

“The Ability to Deliver New Value to a Customer. After all, it is not innovation until the customer says it is.”

“The managed effort of an organization to develop new products, new services, or new uses for existing products or services.” – Ricky W. Griffin

“The commercialization of creativity.” – Anonymous

“Creating something before people know they need it. – Guy Kawaski

“Innovation is a new way of doing something or “new stuff that is made useful” . It may refer to incremental and emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations. …”

“The act of introducing something new.” – The American Heritage Dictionary

Are libraries innovative? All of them? Which ones?

Look here, here and here.

  1. Hello,
I’ve asked to myself the very same question recently and published the following as per restitution of my thoughts and readings : http://pemic.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/what-is-innovation-who-is-innovating/

Very interesting the innovation within/for libraries. I imagine you consider the classification of the books, the disposition of the furnitures, the reception desk, computerized means and more. As I’m working on knowledge and practice in companies, I would be glad to exchanging with you about it and especially the contribution of the readers, subscribers to the library.
