Surprise Award

I was totally flummoxed last night when I was attending the annual instructor appreciation night for the University of Toronto iSchool. I have been teaching for the iSchool Institute for over 20 years and love doing it. I think that I probably learn more from my students than they learn from me so it’s a fair trade (grin).

So last night as the iSchool Institute executive director, Bruce Stewart, was making the usual short remarks he started announcing the winner of this year’s 2010 Outstanding Teaching Award, and then he said my name. And if you don’t believe I was surprised, check out this picture:

And here’s a close-up of the trophy set against my favourite chair:

Pretty, eh? As an unathletic kid I never got the trophy hardware so I love getting it as an old man.

Anyway I was honoured and surprised and touched. It has been a privilege for over 30 years to be associated with my alma mater and this award was a real treat. Thank you.
