Dealing with “Google Fatigue”

Here’s one for the bulletin board:

Humans vs. automated search: Why people power is cool again
by Pete Cashmore, (from Mashable) Special to CNN

“What’s the best way to find great links on the web? Is it algorithmic search engines like Google, people-powered decision-making, or a combination of both?”

Read on to hear about the delights of human powered selection, search and curation. Amazingly, the whole article is done without once mentioning librarians. What a novel concept: ‘human judgement”!

“Human judgemnent” was what had differentiated Google from other search engines. The algorithms were based on how many human-edited websites would link to the same website using the same keywords or phrases.

That spammers have managed to throw a metaphorical wrench in the gears is less a sign that Google isn’t “human” enough and more a sign that spammers and marketers have found yet another way to take advantage of and ruin another fabulous Internet tool (as they have previously done with e-mail and Usenet).
