Got the 404 on that?

I loved these collections of 404 pages. You know them. They’re the ones you hit when the page has changed or gone missing or you made a typo in the URL.

So it got me to thinking. What does your library’s 404 page look like? Here’s an opportunity to not look ‘ordinary’ and stand out a bit. And dead ends in searching are a librarian’s stock in trade. You could send a message like these:

“Hit a dead end? Call the library at 800-555-1212”

“Oops. Missing information! Try your library information desk @abcdef”

“404 Page Not Found: If you want to find information just call, tweet, txt, or e-mail the library.”

I am sure you can be more creative. It’s also a great place to use your mascot.

If you’ve got a great 404 page, please tell us in the comments.

  1. Check out the Grand Rapids Public Library’s 404 page! We have 3 different ‘stories’ that we rotate: http://www.grpl.org/greeds
