Psychologist Philip Zimbardo asks, “Why are boys struggling?” He shares some stats (lower graduation rates, greater worries about intimacy and relationships) and suggests a few reasons — and he asks for your help! Watch his talk, then take his short 10-question survey:
Philip Zimbardo: The demise of guys?
What is the role of libraries of all types in addressing the gender divide. Library associations were front and centre on addressing the issues faced by girls. Can we step up to address the issues faced by boys today?
It would be wonderful if libraries played a role in getting drop-out rates down, graduation rates up, furthers school progress and completion, and suicide and drug levels lowered to current ‘girl’ levels, etc.

Yes, yes…too much time in isolation, being stimulated by video games. Rewired so that the classroom becomes intolerable. So, do we ban the games? Or do we learn from them…and make them socially interactive? The answer is clear to me. In classrooms that adopt the latter, we would likely see boys rocking academically. Will this happen in an institution that has become increasingly feminized? What if gender equity were to be applied to the hiring of teachers in the same way that it is to the hiring of administrators? Perhaps if it were, teaching stragegies and resources might be more “boy-friendly.”
