In a slapdown with McDonalds . . .

There are more libraries in the US than there are McDonald’s.
Public Libraries – less calories, more fulfilling.

Can we see the empirical evidence for this?
According to ALA there are a total of 16,604 public libraries including branches.(http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/ola/quotablefacts/QuotableFacts2010.pdf)
According to the McDonald’s web site there are over 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants in the US. (http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/mcd/franchising/us_franchising/why_mcdonalds.html)
Number of libraries: 16,698 — see http://www.ala.org/ala/professionalresources/libfactsheets/alalibraryfactsheet01.cfm;
Number of McDonalds at end of 2010: 14,027 — see http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/etc/medialib/aboutMcDonalds/investor_relations3.Par.56096.File.dat/2010%20Annual%20Report%20%28print%29.pdf
FEWER calories
Quick count shows 15 libraries (not counting public or private secondary schools) but only 10 Macs in Virgina Beach (pop.435,000).
And you can’t download a burger and fries to your smartphone.
Thank you all for the evidence – I sit on my McD’s laden arse corrected.
Love Lola’s comment by the way x
Here’s some more OCLC fun data sheets with libraries compared to Amazon and FedEx, etc.:
