Public Libraries as Government Access Points

When do you suppose that government will wake up to the fact that public libraries are among the best places to put acces to governmentstuff.  Who needs expensive unstaffed kiosks?  Public libraries have better hours than most places, great helpful staff, printers, and trained people to help anyone access the web. D’yuh figger never?

“Opposition slams plan to pull ServiceOntario kiosks

Security concerns forced shutdown in June

The government decided to pull the plug on ServiceOntario kiosks. Security concerns forced the shutdown of the terminals in June. (Government of Ontario)

Opposition critics are slamming the governing Liberals for permanently pulling the plug on all 72 ServiceOntario kiosks across the province.

The machines, which are used to change addresses and renew licence plate stickers, were shut down in June after concerns were raised about security breaches.

The Progressive Conservatives say it’s another example of the government running away from a problem that they should have seen coming.

The New Democrats say that if the government can’t properly run kiosks, it probably can’t be trusted to run the province.

Both say it will inconvenience a lot of customers who count on the kiosks to access the services.

The government says it made the decision after careful analysis, saying that even if it spent millions on security improvements, the kiosks would still be vulnerable to high-tech crime.”
