The February 2013 Illinois Library Association Reporter contains:
“Legal Issues Relating to Online Social Networking,” by Julie Tappendorf, an attorney with the law firm Ancel Glink.
The article is attached and it is on the ILA website www.ila.org/store/ila-reporter
Pages_16-19 Legal Issues Relating to Online Social Networking (4 page PDF)
Tappendorf encourages libraries to develop a social media policy which would cover, at a minimum, five points:
- Purpose
- Approval and administration
- Comment policy
- Compliances with laws
- Employee usage policy
Libraries should “not lose sight of their legal obligations to the public and their patrons in these evolving digital times. Developing a valid and enforceable social media policy will remind your library of its obligations to its public, its patrons, and its employees.”
HT Robert P. Doyle, Illinois Library Association
Caution: This is advisory and US based.
