Some useful Book facts in Canada

The weekend Metronews.ca print edition of METRO called out these numbers (no online version that I can find):

Quoting Booknet Canada:

In Canada:

“Physical paperback books are still the #1 choice for readers making up 58% of sales in 20912 followed by hardcovers at 24%”

Indigo (the dominant big box store in Canada) saw online sales surge 19.3% in 2013. This was done by price matching Amazon.ca (but undercutting prices in the physical stores!)

eBooks seemed to have plateaued at 15% of readers where 32% read on phones and 78% read on tablets or e-readers.

Chapters/Indigo’s strategy was to be books, music and movies but now is mutating to be a lifestyle store with a strong foundation in reading (but a lot of candles, toys, desk supplies and now American Girl dolls in Canada).  It has about 131 small stores (under brands like Coles) and 93 or so superstores (recently shrunk by three).  It reports its latest results on May 27.

Useful environmental, competitor and collaborator intelligence.  Indigo donates and helps run a major reading program for books in schools and libraries.
