Editorial: Libraries should not be responsible for solving our community’s substance abuse problems
Jim Neale commented: “An editorial from Boulder CO speaking to the library closure due to methamphetamine contamination. From the article: Libraries are communal hubs. They are meant to be open to all. And it is this very openness that makes them susceptible to situations such as this one, especially in a city like Boulder, which is in the throes of a homelessness crisis. Those in our community without access to services or resources or facilities often have nowhere to turn but to the library — for bathrooms, for water fountains, for warmth in freezing temperatures, for internet access. The use of methamphetamines in the library is deeply unfortunate, but the real black eye should not be on the library, but on our community and our society as a whole.”
