“Yahoo wants in on the AI action. While its news aggregation platform already has hundreds of millions of readers per month, Yahoo is saying ‘I want more.’ So it’s teaming up with Artifact, which built AI-powered news feeds before almost shutting down in January. Yahoo thinks the company’s tech will be a perfect fit.
Whether journalists are ready or not, AI is headed to the newsroom. Some reporters are worried AI will only hurt an industry that’s already struggling. But others think they can stay ahead of the curve by embracing new AI tools — from automated fact-checking to personalized news feeds.
Here’s how news outlets are reacting:
  • The Financial Times created an experimental chatbot that draws its responses from the paper’s archive of articles and economic data.
  • In December, Axel Springer, the parent company of Politico, Business Insider, and Die Welt, said it had signed a first-of-its-kind publishing deal with OpenAI.
  • The BBC said it’s going to incorporate generative AI into its production process. It’ll start by using its own archives to train a new AI model.
  • The New York Times plans to launch a generative AI ad tool this year. But it also sued OpenAI for allegedly using millions of its articles to train ChatGPT — a sign that not every outlet sees AI as a net positive.”
