Public Libraries Survey (PLS)
Public Libraries See a Resounding Comeback
We’re excited to highlight the latest findings from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Public Libraries Survey – a comprehensive study of 9,000+ library systems across the U.S. that underscores the enduring relevance of public libraries.
Key take-aways:
– Over 800 million visits to public libraries in 2023 – that’s ~2.2 million visits per day.
– More than 155 million registered users across library service areas – nearly half of all Americans.
– A total of 4.6 million programs offered in 2023, attended by 93 million people.
– Physical circulation rebounded to 4.37 items per person, up from 3.41 in 2021.
– Digital materials also grew, reaching 1.68 downloads/e-items per person.
– Library staffing levels are returning to pre-pandemic strength – a clear signal of investment in the people who make library services possible.
These numbers tell a powerful story: public libraries remain among the most trusted institutions in our communities, delivering access, education, connection and opportunity.
At Counting Opinions, we’re proud to support library agencies with data collection, reporting and insight tools that help them demonstrate impact, improve services and make data-driven decisions. This year’s IMLS data reinforces why this work matters so much.”
